A Page need not represent a young person

The Page of Swords in a “what should I prepare before the meeting?” position might be about questions, listening and precision. It does not require you to predict the arrival of a young person, still less to claim that person is watching or lying. A court card permits several kinds of reading: someone identifiable in the situation, an approach the person asking might adopt, or a function within a process. The question and position help you choose among them.

Pages, sometimes called Knaves or Valets in translations of other decks, often help us think about learning, messages, exploration and first attempts. “Learner” does not mean incompetent. An experienced person can become a learner when entering a new field.

Three hypotheses before you choose

When a Page appears, write three short possibilities. Person: “Is there someone identifiable who is learning or bringing information?” Approach: “Do I need to ask, practise or try a new method?” Function: “What news, document, initial contact or observation task moves this process forward?” Set aside any version unsupported by the question. If several remain possible, keep the ambiguity and look for a way to test them.

For example, in a reading about applying for a grant, the Page of Pentacles in a “next step” position might invite you to read the requirements and prepare documents. “A student will bring you money” is a much more specific claim with no evidence behind it. The restrained reading is also more useful.

The four Pages in one question

Question: “How should I prepare my first lesson on a topic I do not know well?” Page of Wands: rehearse an opening activity and acknowledge that you are still exploring. Page of Cups: attend to the audience's response and to your own motivation. Page of Swords: frame questions that will check understanding and verify your claims. Page of Pentacles: study materials, timings and practical exercises.

This comparison does not require every deck to assign precisely these words to the cards. It shows how the suit changes the mode of learning. In an actual spread, we would also consider the position and the other cards. The Page of Cups as a “risk” might warn against relying on enthusiasm alone; as a “resource”, it may remind you of the value of listening sensitively to the group.

Tarot de Marseille and Rider–Waite–Smith

Court cards depict figures in both systems, but gestures, backgrounds, colours and objects vary across editions. A Marseille Page of Wands may hold the wand in a different posture from the Rider–Waite–Smith figure, who stands in a landscape. Describe the object and gesture on your own card before consulting an interpretation written for another edition. Not attributing a Rider desert or facial expression to Marseille prevents a false claim of “visual evidence”.

Names and hierarchies also change in some modern decks. Before using a manual, examine four control cards of the same suit: a Page, Knight, Queen and King. If the deck replaces these ranks, use its guide to justify any equivalence. The word “Page” on its own does not guarantee identical imagery.

Full example: opening a conversation about collaboration

Question: “What should I prepare to propose a collaboration with a publisher?” Positions: what I already have, what I need to research and how to make contact. The Three of Pentacles, Page of Swords and Two of Cups appear. The Three of Pentacles as a resource may point to work you can demonstrate: a sample, an outline or earlier results. The Page of Swords in the research position invites you to learn about the publisher's list, intended readers and terms before writing. The Two of Cups in the contact position focuses on reciprocity: what is the publisher seeking, and what does your project offer?

A summary might be: “Prepare a specific sample, check that it suits the publisher's list, and write a proposal explaining the benefit to both sides.” The cards do not establish that the proposal will be accepted or answered within a given period. Nor do they invent a young person at the publisher. Here the Page serves a research function.

A record that helps you learn

Beside the Page in your notes, write “person / approach / function” and record what in the context favoured your choice. If you return to the case weeks later, do not judge the reading solely by whether a similar event occurred. Ask whether the interpretation was clear, cautious and useful given what was known at the time. This standard prevents you from fitting a court card retrospectively to any outcome.

A Page in a relationship reading

Question: “How can I start a conversation after months of distance?” The Page of Cups in an “approach” position might suggest a simple, open expression: ask whether the other person would like to talk without demanding an emotional response. The Page of Swords in the same position shifts attention to clarity: name your reason for getting in touch and avoid ambiguous messages. The Page of Pentacles could suggest a specific occasion while respecting practical constraints. The Page of Wands might suggest an energetic first gesture, perhaps too fast if the other person needs time.

Do not assume any of these Pages means a message will arrive from the other person. The position asks how you might act. Stating that function first helps you avoid turning the card into a prediction. The other person's response remains their choice and may never come.

What a Page can teach someone experienced

An illustrator with years of experience might draw the Page of Pentacles when she begins teaching. That does not mean she has forgotten how to draw. The card might concern learning to organise a lesson, finding out which materials students need, and choosing exercises that show progress. A Page of Swords might prompt her to review sources or ask what the students understand. The rank marks a relationship to a new field, not the person's overall ability.

A substitution test

At the end, replace “there is a young person” with “there is something to learn, observe or communicate”. If the reading becomes more specific, the original character was probably your projection. If the situation does include an identified learner, you can retain the interpersonal reading and state what supports it. Leave room for error.
