Types of tarot decks: Marseille and Rider-Waite-Smith
The most useful distinction for a new reader is the deck in their hands. Marseille and Rider-Waite-Smith share a broad structure, but their pictures give the reader different clues.
What they share
Both traditions commonly use 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana divided among four suits. A reading also depends on the question, the card's place in a spread and its neighbors. A single keyword cannot do all of that work.
Shared structure does not make every illustration interchangeable. Compare the numbered Minor Arcana in your deck with the illustrations explained by the book you intend to use.
Marseille: suit symbols on the numbered cards
Traditional Marseille pip cards show cups, swords, batons or coins arranged on the card, rather than a little narrative scene. Reading them involves suit, number, composition and the other cards on the table. It would be misleading to borrow a Rider-Waite scene that is absent from the card.
In the historical pattern followed by Sabio Tarot's Marseille books, Justice is VIII, Strength XI and trump XIII may be unnamed. Publishers can produce variants, so identify your own deck.
Rider-Waite-Smith: illustrated Minor Arcana
Pamela Colman Smith's early twentieth-century images brought scenes to many numbered Minor Arcana. Figures, objects and gestures can help a beginner build a reading. This system numbers Strength VIII and Justice XI.
Choose a beginner's guide if you are learning individual cards. Choose a combinations book when you recognize the cards but need to explain how two work together. Neither system is universally better; the match between your deck and your method matters most.
